PRP with Microneedling for Hair Growth

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a naturally occurring component of your blood that contains many growth factors that are important to tissue repair. Ringpfeil Advanced Dermatology offers PRP therapy for hair growth in Philadelphia as it has been shown to be an effective treatment for some types of hair loss when injected into the scalp.

What Type of Hair Loss May Benefit from PRP?

Androgenetic Alopecia

Much of the research pertaining to PRP as a hair loss treatment has concentrated on androgenetic alopecia. This form of hair loss is common in both men and women, although the pattern of hair loss between the sexes is different.

In men, androgenetic alopecia is the condition known as male pattern baldness. It typically begins when a man hits their 30’s or 40’s, although it can happen at a much younger age - even just after puberty.

Male pattern baldness is often a hereditary condition and follows a distinct sequence where the hairline starts to recede from the temples, forming a classic “M” shape over time. Hair also thins near the top of the head at the crown and may result in partial or complete baldness.

Women do not tend to have a receding hairline or thinning crown in the same way as men. Instead, there is a generalized thinning of hair all over the head that in rare cases can lead to total baldness.

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata (AA) is an auto-immune disease that causes hair to fall out in small clumps. The hair loss can be patchy, and it may be unnoticeable at first. However, the hair loss may become more apparent if the patches start to connect and the bald areas are bigger.

PRP has been used as a treatment for AA with good results—significantly increasing hair regrowth with little in the way of side effects.

PRP for Newly Transplanted Hair

Platelet-rich plasma may be used successfully as a complementing therapy to:

  • Strengthen hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth
  • Promote tissue repair and the healing process after a hair transplant
  • Maintain and increase the viability of transplanted hair follicles

Side Effects and Risks of PRP for Hair Loss

There are likely to be no side effects to the injected PRP as it is harvested from your own body. However, you may experience mild pain at the injection site, swelling, itching, temporary bleeding, and tenderness over the scalp.

I was impressed that the doctor really listened to me and that she thoroughly answered my questions. Instead of telling me not to worry about things, she explained the nature of the condition and why it wasn't a concern. She also thoroughly explained my treatment options so I could make an informed decision.

#32011-03-09 09:12:38

I am a little annoyed that I called to say I was on my way and I was told that I may not get here in time and will probably have to reschedule. Then when I got here, I filled out the paperwork then had to wait 20 minutes to be seen. It would be nice to know the receptionist's name so I know who I am calling when I have questions. It would be nice to have WiFi available during the wait.

#42011-06-22 17:06:20
